Father-Daughter Dance: Dad's Picks

When I got home from visiting B, the lil sis (who had waited up for me - what a doll) told me that my dad had spent the last several nights going through their iTunes library in search of a good father-daughter dance.  How adorable is that?!  Sure enough, when I saw him the next day, he told me he had a few songs in mind, and sat down at the computer to play them for me.

His choices definitely have an old-school country flavor to them, and listening to them brought a smile to my face.  While it's not really a musical genre I listen to regularly, they're the kinds of songs my parents played when I was growing up, so the nostalgia factor is huge.

Jerry Jeff Walker - She Knows Her Daddy Sings

This is a really sweet song, although I have to nominate it as one of the most awkward music videos of all time.  Regardless, I'll probably always associate Jerry Jeff Walker with my parents since I think they own every one of his albums, and I can definitely imagine dancing with my dad to this song.

Merle Haggard - Proud to Be Your Old Man

This isn't one of Merle's best-known hits, and I couldn't find a full of the version of the song online anywhere.  But I'll give you a taste of the lyrics:  "I might be over the hill, but you make growing old quite a thrill.  So promenade and take my by the hand.  You make me proud to be your old man."  It's a lively two-step, so our grinning faces as we sachet around the dance floor would probably yield better photo ops than if we choose a song that will have me bawling like a baby.

Merle Haggard - I'm Still Your Daddy

He was mostly kidding about this one.  I mean "It's true, I've done some time in prison" isn't exactly the sweet and sentimental tone we're going for.  But I humored him and listened to the whole thing, and I'll admit that the general sentiment of the song is pretty sweet.

Jimmy Buffett - Come Monday

Jimmy Buffett is my dad's favorite artist, and this song is one of the "most played" in my parents' iTunes library.  It would not surprise me at all if this is the song he chooses, and it would be completely fine by me.  Mr. Buffett always puts me in the mindset of floating on the open water, soaking in the sun and enjoying the outdoors, and nothing says "my dad" more than that.

Then he asked which songs I had in mind, so I played them for him.  After Landslide, emotions were running high, so I broke the tension by suggesting that maybe we should go with something a bit more up-beat, like this:

It was one of the first songs I learned to play on the piano, and my dad always loved listening to me play it.  He said we could dance to that song, but only if we choreographed some kind of Charlie Brown dance moves to go along with it.  And thus, the conversation ended with us laughing at the idea of the looks on guests's faces as we head-bobbed along with Linus, Lucy and the rest of the gang.

So no decision yet, but at least we're making headway.  Did you have difficulty choosing music due to a difference in musical tastes?  How did you settle it?
