What's the cool jams?

So...B and I have a problem: we can't for the life of us agree on music for the reception.

It's not so much that we have different tastes in music, just that I tend to be more tolerant of mainstream tunes than he is.  I can jam out to pretty much anything I can sing to, while his standards are a wee bit higher.  I guess that's what comes with the territory of being a friggin Master of Music and all...psh.  Anyway, the music conversation usually goes something like this:
But we both hate Katy Perry!  Let's just put all of her songs on the "Do Not Play" list and be done with it!
I know...but some of her songs are fun to dance to, and I'm sure a lot of our guests like her music.  Don't we kind of need to think about their music tastes and not just ours?
But she can't sing and her music is terrible!
At which point I ask whether hearing "California Gurls" at our wedding reception would really be the end of the world and he gives me a pointed look.

On top of the disagreement about the presence of Mrs. Brand's tunes at our reception, B also wants to limit the amount of country music we play and he definitely doesn't share our guests's and my fondness for Taylor Swift, Britney and N'Sync.  I smell a musical meltdown coming on...

I guess I'm just having a hard time finding the balance.  On the one hand, we've been working so hard to make our wedding day about us, so why should we let our guests dictate the playlist?  On the other hand, I want our guests to have a good time, and if we limit the dance music to songs that he and I both like, the majority of our guests will probably leave early, scratching their heads.  As much as I love groups like St. Vincent, Of Montreal, and The New Pornographers, their music definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea.  And as far as a "Do Not Play" list goes, where do we draw the line?  Why is it okay for me to outlaw "Baby Got Back" but then tell him he can't ban "Teenage Dream"?  Ugh...compromise is hard!

It's not like there won't be songs that everyone knows - B is the biggest 70s music fan I know.  Earth Wind and Fire will definitely be making a few appearances throughout the night, along with Gaga, Beyonce, and Kanye.  But what about the Ke$ha, Miley, and Bieber fans?  Do we throw them a bone, or just say no?  I guess that's TBD for now.

What do you think?  Katy Perry: Yay or Nay?
